Finding a trusted heating, cooling, plumbing or electrical contractor can be a difficult proposition.

You want to find a company that you can trust, since they will be working in and around your home. So before you sign on the dotted line, here are our top tips for finding the best Sarasota area contractor.

Ask for recommendations

The best place to start looking for reliable contractors is with friends and family. Who have they used? Was it a good experience? Would they recommend them? You can also utilize online review communities like Yelp, Google Plus Local and Yahoo! Local and services such as Angie’s List to find great, reliable reviews.

Check their license

In the state of Florida, contractors in most industries must have a valid license. In order to get such a license, the contractor must pay a fee to become registered with the state. While a license is not a guarantee of competence, it is the first sign of a reputable and trustworthy contractor. A license tells you that they probably won’t just disappear after the project.

For verification the license they give you is valid, you can search the Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation online here.

Do some research

Once you have your list narrowed down to two or three contractors you are considering, it’s time to do a little research. Find out how long each company has been in business. Do a quick Google search - does the overall sentiment seem to be positive or negative?

Also, make sure they have adequate insurance. Otherwise, if something unthinkable happens while they are on your property, you could be held responsible. Having insurance is another sign of a reputable contractor.

Get it in writing

If you are having major work done (or even a small repair) it is best to get estimates from a couple of companies to help you make your decision. Make sure you get the estimates or proposals in writing so you can compare them later, outside of the heat of the moment.

Also note, not all proposals are created equal. What kind of guarantees do the contractors have on their work? Are they quoting a flat-rate price or could it change if the project takes longer than anticipated? Remember that paying less is fine, but that doesn’t mean the cheapest quote is automatically the best.
